Have you ever wondered what kids are truly interested in? Have you ever spent ten minutes with an eleven-year-old trying to explain something, only to find out he or she can’t tell you the first thing about it the moment you are done talking? This website is a project that takes something we do in our 5th grade classroom and tries to explain it to the world. Modern times call for modern methodology. This website aims to manipulate the momentum of Myspace and do Jujitsu to YouTube. But how does it work?
Before I tell you about the site, you should understand how scientific inquiry is implemented in our classroom. About half of the curriculum in our class is selected by the students themselves. They find questions in the world around them, bring them to the classroom, and vote democratically on which to pursue. Then one student volunteers to find the answer. She or he brings that answer back to our class in presentation form. Usually, the student has an activity or demonstration that supports the presentation in a more hands-on way.
They say you don’t fully learn something until you must use it. For these students, having to explain a concept in their own words requires a deeper understanding. For the answers in this website, I had the students select a question they did not present. I think this created a deep appreciation for the fact that having heard a presentation on the subject would not be enough and they would need to supplement what they heard and remembered with additional resources.
The informal encyclopedia-style entries in this website were created by 5th graders. They are not directly edited by the teacher or a parent. What you see is what you get. Which, I guess, begs a disclaimer: the webmaster (me) is not responsible for any typos, false information, misquoted sources, or plagiarism. He would be VERY HAPPY to hear about any of it, however. If you find something on this site that, in your opinion, just shouldn’t be, please do not hesitate to drop me a line. I can be reached at: wilsonhubbell@gmail.com.
Eventually, we hope to make the site look a bit less sloppy, but it has come together pretty nicely over the past year. You can browse by topic or use the search mechanism to find more specific information
Happy Learning!
